The Story: Two complete strangers met for a brief period of time. Inspired by similar musical influences, they merged their talents and wrote an album’s worth of intensely heartfelt songs. And then they parted ways. Some things in life are simply meant to be…and for the two members of Lunation, the creation of their one and only album, Restless, was one of those things.

The Words: Lyrically, Restless offers a peek into the fractured and dark recesses of the female mind. Written at a particularly trying period in her life, vocalist Kate Galluzzo’s introspective lyrical work leaves her utterly exposed. And her sultry, yet precise vocal style has a way of gently pulling the listener closer…as if the words were being whispered directly into their ear.

The Music: Musically, Lunation serves up a crossbreed of densely layered electronica and moody guitar rock. Always a fan of “headphone music”, Dan Milligan achieved his sonically detailed musical vision by blending of organic instruments, such as piano, strings, fretless bass, saxophone, guitars and drums with electronic elements such as percolating percussion loops, sampled guitars and dark synth-based arpeggios.

The Magic: Like so many memorable songwriting teams before them, the key to Lunation’s unique sound is not necessarily their talent as individuals, but more about how Kate Galluzzo’s lyrics and Dan Milligan’s music magically merge into a cohesive sound that is as focused as it is inspired. A sound that is multi-layered, and yet accessible. A sound that is dark, and yet hopeful.
